Description

The Dune bookstore and shelf were inspired by various natural forms: dunes, running water, fractals. The shelf winding surfaces appear spontaneous at first sight, but in reality the wave is based on an algorithm that repeats after every fifth interval. The repetition is created by three elements with different shapes both vertically and horizontally.

The algorithm is not computer generated but created by the designer. The shelf is based on the flower of life principle and the golden ratio that attracts the human eye through its ideal ratio. When designing the shelf, the artist sets the goal of generating the minimum possible waste, an objective achieved by the strategic placement of the details and the perfect adjustment of the arches that are cut with a joint line for both elements. Dune can be used as a wall shelf or as a room divider.

Smaller and larger models can be produced on request. The product has been cut in the high quality 12 mm birch plywood CNC workbench. The shelf is easy to assemble according to the instructions due to a spike system and simple pellet accessories.

Jaanus Orgusaar

Inspired by the geometry of nature

Borealis Ltd began in 2010 as a family business with Jaanus Orgusaar as head of design and Margit Lillak as sales and marketing manager. Their focus has always been on sustainably producing design objects made from natural materials—primarily birch plywood. All their products are flat-packed, minimizing the carbon footprint of their shipping logistics. Their most iconic product is the Comb series of shelving units. In addition to furniture, Borealis has recently developed a small architecture division that produces small, self-sustaining living units.

Eco-designer Jaanus Orgusaar is an inventor and designer who delves directly into the primal source. His work is inspired by the geometry of nature, making his objects distinctly recognizable. His most remarkable quality is the construction of three-dimensional objects from two-dimensional sheet material, employing imaginative and personal patterns. As a passionate experimenter, he plays with structures that result in strikingly designed architectural objects. Form, based on the principles of nature, allows him to change the scale of the object, so that a lamp on Jaanus's desk can transform into a house and vice versa. His sculptural interior design objects are both practical and beautiful, offering a unique spatial experience. Just as nature strives for structure and order while adapting to its environment, the designer attempts to do the same, applying this method to his conception of design and architecture. Most of the interior objects were created based on the practical needs of the designer and his family. All the products are used daily—tested, refined, and perfected over the years.
