Dam

Portuguese culture and nature are our inspirations for designing products that appeal to emotions, simplicity, and quality of life.

DAM is a Portuguese brand founded in 2013 in SĆ£o JoĆ£o da Madeira, a city located 30 km from Porto, 20 km from the coast, and 30 km from the mountains. Its products reflect a blend of design, industry, and craftsmanship, always keeping the country's collective cultural heritage in mind. The location and its people are special, so the brand strives to value local labor while adding an avant-garde touch through the application of new techniques, technologies, and designs. Its primary goal is to create sustainable, long-lasting products without losing its passion for product design—essentially bridging the gap between culture and the economy. Its commitment to sustainability rests on five fundamental values: "Create to Last" (production, assembly, and packaging take place in Portugal with constant quality control); "Honest Materials" (using materials that best represent their culture and evoke sensations, such as FSC-certified solid wood and cork, certified fabrics, marble, hemp, rice straw, and wicker—with cork being a 100% natural, recyclable, reusable, and renewable material that epitomizes the Portuguese essence); "Cultural Heritage" (creating unique, creative products by researching the culture and stories of the people who make up the country); "Price" (setting appropriate prices based on the unique and special characteristics of each product, while also supporting the local economy); and "Made-to-Order" (avoiding mass production and the resulting waste by manufacturing items only upon request, thereby using only the necessary materials and energy to fulfill orders and offering customers the opportunity to customize products to their liking).

Eco-designers Hugo Silva and Joana Santos, the founders and designers behind DAM, both hold bachelor’s and master’s degrees in design from the University of Aveiro in Portugal. Joana Santos helped found the Aveiro region’s first Junior Enterprise—Aveiro Smart Business—and was involved with the Portuguese Federation of Junior Enterprises. She has also collaborated with various companies on branding and graphic communication projects, with a particular passion for graphic design. Hugo Silva possesses extensive experience in the design world, having worked as an interaction designer at CreativebitBox and B-Around. He has also collaborated with the ProvidĆŖncia Design studio on projects such as the Troia Museum and the Penafiel Museum; the studio has won numerous national and international awards. Finally, Christophe de Sousa is a French-Portuguese product designer and the first to be invited to design for DAM. He studied Industrial Design at the Universidade LusĆada in Porto and has run his own design studio in the city since 2017. He is currently recognized as one of the most prestigious designers of his generation in Portugal.
